Production: On the 5th of April, Working Title and PeaPie films acquired the the film rights to thriller novel TRASH, written by Andy Mulligan. Richard Curtis is set to adapt the novel into film material whilst Stephen Daldry is set to direct.

Plot Summary: "The contemporary thriller follows three boys in an unnamed third world country, in the not so distant future, who scrape a living by picking through trash on the outskirts of a large city. One day, Raphael finds something very mysterious in a leather bag, the contents of which are so mysterious they decide to keep it, even when offered a reward a reward for it from the police, which plunges them into a terrifying adventure with harsh consequences, pitting their wits against corruption and authority and stay ahead of their pursuers. It's up to Raphael, Gardo and Rat, three boys with no education, no parents, no homes, and no money to solve the mystery and to right a terrible wrong."

Trash begins shooting in Brazil

Three time Oscar-nominated and Tony award-winning director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours, The Reader) has reteamed with Working Title Films to direct the contemporary thriller TRASH, adapted from the acclaimed novel by Andy Mulligan for the screen by Richard Curtis (War Horse, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill).
TRASH is a contemporary thriller following three boys, Raphael, Gardo and Rat, who eke out a living picking through rubbish mounds, until a surprise discovery sets them on a breath-taking adventure pitting their wits against corruption and authority.
Martin Sheen (Apocalypse Now, The Amazing Spider Man, Catch Me If You Can) will star as Father Juilliard, with Rooney Mara (Side Effect, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network) set to play young NGO worker, Olivia. Wagner Moura (Elysium, Elite Squad, Fellini Black and White) and Selton Mello (Os Maias, The Clown) are also on board to co-star as Jose Angelo and Frederico respectively. The three young leads will be played by newcomers Eduardo Luis Paes Marciano F. Batista, Rickson Pereira Ramos and Gabriel Weinstein.
The Working Title Film, PeaPie Films and 02 Filmes production began filming on location in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on July 31. Universal Pictures will distribute the movie worldwide.
Working Title Films’ co-chairs Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are producing TRASH with PeaPie Films’ Kris Thykier.
Stephen Daldry commented on the announcement: “I feel unbelievably privileged to have assembled this group of talent for Trash, Martin and Rooney are two of the most powerful and committed actors in the world and in Wagner and Selton, I am working with Brazilian royalty.
