Three time Oscar-nominated and Tony award-winning director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours, The Reader) has reteamed with Working Title Films to direct the contemporary thriller TRASH, adapted from the acclaimed novel by Andy Mulligan for the screen by Richard Curtis (War Horse, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill).
TRASH is a contemporary thriller following three boys, Raphael, Gardo and Rat, who eke out a living picking through rubbish mounds, until a surprise discovery sets them on a breath-taking adventure pitting their wits against corruption and authority.
Martin Sheen (Apocalypse Now, The Amazing Spider Man, Catch Me If You Can) will star as Father Juilliard, with Rooney Mara (Side Effect, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network) set to play young NGO worker, Olivia. Wagner Moura (Elysium, Elite Squad, Fellini Black and White) and Selton Mello (Os Maias, The Clown) are also on board to co-star as Jose Angelo and Frederico respectively. The three young leads will be played by newcomers Eduardo Luis Paes Marciano F. Batista, Rickson Pereira Ramos and Gabriel Weinstein.
The Working Title Film, PeaPie Films and 02 Filmes production began filming on location in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on July 31. Universal Pictures will distribute the movie worldwide.
Working Title Films’ co-chairs Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are producing TRASH with PeaPie Films’ Kris Thykier.
Stephen Daldry commented on the announcement: “I feel unbelievably privileged to have assembled this group of talent for Trash, Martin and Rooney are two of the most powerful and committed actors in the world and in Wagner and Selton, I am working with Brazilian royalty.
"It is thrilling to be going on this journey at the most exciting moment in Brazil’s recent history and I am particularly proud to be introducing three of the most extraordinary young performers I have ever worked with in Eduardo, Rickson and Gabriel.
